From local beginnings to a national footprint, the story of The Metropolitan Network began with families, education, and a direct connection to the home.
The Metropolitan Network

1997 — THE BEGINNING

A small group of teachers began offering one-on-one, in-home guitar, piano, and voice lessons to families on Chicago’s North Shore, growing steadily one household at a time.

THE TEACHERS NETWORK

As the first private music teaching network of its kind, the program was introduced to more than 12,000 homes across Chicago’s North Shore. Demand quickly exceeded the capacity of the original teachers, forming the North Shore Teachers Network.

A BROADER IDEA TAKES SHAPE

What began on Chicago’s North Shore expanded into major metropolitan areas across the United States, connecting households with carefully selected instructors in more than 1,500 communities.

THE METROPOLITAN NETWORK

Built on decades of experience working directly with families, The Metropolitan Network reflects a deep understanding of how households discover and choose trusted professionals.

Built One Household at a Time

The Metropolitan Network began in 1997 as a small teaching partnership in the suburbs of Chicago.

Beginning with guitar, piano, and voice lessons, it started as an in-home private lesson service — connecting families with trusted instructors directly in their homes.

The real turning point came when the service was introduced to households across Chicago’s North Shore. A direct outreach campaign reached approximately 12,000 homes. One of the earliest private teaching networks of its kind, the model quickly gained momentum. What began as a handful of local families soon expanded beyond the North Shore, as word spread from one household to the next.

As interest grew, so did the need for additional instructors. Teachers were carefully selected and introduced to families based on location, personality, and teaching style. The goal was simple: make sure every household felt comfortable with the instructor who walked through their door.

Within days the number of inquiries continued to grow rapidly, revealing something that hadn’t been fully understood until that moment: families weren’t just looking for lessons. They were looking for people they could trust.

Over time the system continued to grow. What began as a local network gradually expanded beyond Chicago, eventually connecting thousands of households with independent instructors across the country.

Along the way, the experience revealed something deeper about how people make decisions.

Families rarely choose important services based solely on advertisements or listings. More often, they rely on trust — the ability to understand who someone is, how they think, and whether they feel comfortable welcoming that person into their lives.

That realization would eventually shape the next chapter.

Instead of relying on traditional advertising or anonymous listings, The Metropolitan Network began introducing professionals to households in a more personal way. Short audio introductions — what we call Audio Links — allow professionals to share their story, experience, and approach before a potential client ever reaches out.

In a world where professionals often appear interchangeable in search results, these introductions help households form a clearer first impression — turning a long list of options into a more thoughtful shortlist.

The Metropolitan Network was built from the same principles that guided the original teaching partnership: trusted introductions, thoughtful placement, and genuine connection between households and independent professionals.

Today the platform brings together households, professionals, and local communities through a more direct and human approach to discovery.

While the technology has evolved and the network now spans cities across the country, the philosophy remains exactly the same as it was in the beginning.

One household at a time.

About the Founder
Mike Simon grew up just outside of Chicago, surrounded by one of the most influential music scenes in the world. From early encounters with Maxwell Street blues performers to coming of age during the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s, Chicago provided the backdrop for a lifelong creative path.

He picked up the guitar at six years old and began performing publicly by the age of ten, eventually developing into a singer, songwriter, and recording artist. Over the years, Mike has worked alongside legendary engineer Eddie Kramer — known for his work with Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles — and a wide range of accomplished musicians and producers. His album Break to the Grey reflects that journey and remains available on major streaming platforms.

Beyond music, Mike pursued aviation, earning both his commercial pilot’s license and instructor certifications. The discipline and precision of flying shaped his approach to systems thinking, decision making, and entrepreneurship — principles that would later influence his work as a founder.

Over the years, Mike built several ventures centered around connecting independent talent with real audiences and households. That experience eventually led to the creation of The Metropolitan Network, a modern platform designed to bring households, professionals, and communities together through trusted discovery and direct connection.

Today his work sits at the intersection of music, entrepreneurship, and community — bringing together artists, professionals, and local networks through a platform built on the same principle that guided his earliest efforts: real people discovering one another through trust.
